The Master Cleanse Diet

The Master Cleanse Diet, also referred to as the Beyonce diet – for her drastic weight loss while drinking the lemonade concoction – and the Lemonade Diet (although it really doesn’t taste much like lemonade), is a diet that consists of drinking a special mix and nothing else. That’s right – no food, no alcohol, no cheat day.

Master Cleanse Recipe

The Master Cleanse recipe is pretty simple:

  • 2 Tablespoons lemon or lime juice (approx. ½ lemon). Use fresh (organic) lemons or limes only, never canned lemon or lime juice nor frozen lemonade or frozen juice.
  • 2 Tablespoons genuine maple syrup Grade B or C (Not maple flavored sugar syrup)
  • 1/10 Teaspoon cayenne pepper (red pepper) or to taste
  • Water, medium hot

To start the Master Cleanse diet, combine the juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper in a 10 ounce glass and fill with medium hot water. Sip throughout the day until the Master Cleanse concoction is gone – you’ll repeat this a few times. If time is an issue for you, you can make a larger batch of the Master Cleanse Recipe at one time.

How long does the master cleanse diet last?

A typical Master Cleanse diet will last at least 10 days. Longer periods on the Master Cleanse diet can last from 10+ days to 40 days. Note that no food is consumed during the Master Cleanse diet, so be mindful when setting your target end date. When ending the Master Cleanse diet, you should ween yourself back onto food by drinking broths and vegetables – stay away from acidic food for the first few days.

How much weight can I lose on the master cleanse diet?

It’s typical to lose anywhere from 5-15 pounds during a 10 day master cleanse diet fast. Note that this weight is mostly water weight, so once you begin eating solids again, expect to slowly gain any weight back. With proper and healthy eating, however, you can keep your weight loss off.

Pros and Cons of the Master Cleanse Diet

Pros of the master cleanse diet? Well, almost immediate weight loss, for one. While the lemonade concoction isn’t great tasting, fasting does help to clear your mind as well – once you stop thinking about food, that is. Cons of the master cleanse diet include no food – at all – and you’ll need to be near a bathroom at all times. Let’s just say that starting the Master Cleanse diet while on a road trip or on your first date isn’t the best of times. Wait until the fourth date, at least :) Other cons include cravings, tiredness (from lack of calories), irritability, stomach pains and nausea. Sounds great, right?

Master Cleanse Diet Cheats

So, the Master Cleanse Diet doesn’t necessarily condone cheating. However, our motto here at Diet Cheat Day is that “Every Diet Needs A Cheat Day.” Can you expect to still lose weight if you cheat on the Master Cleanse diet? Most likely, yes. Your body will lower your metabolism naturally if you don’t get the necessary calories, so adding a few calories here and there isn’t the worse thing you can do.

Here are a few of our master cleanse diet cheats:

Master Cleanse-Tini

Yep, it’s a cocktail made up of the ingredients in the master cleanse, courtesy of We Like It Raw:

Lemon juice, a touch of maple syrup, a pinch of cayenne, and of course… sake, shaken over ice and then strained into a martini glass
